Experts: Start Early In Your Search For College\u00a0Scholarships<\/h1>\n

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork)<\/strong> \u2014 There is a new mantra when it comes to scoring college scholarships \u2013 it\u2019s never too early.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

As CBS 2\u2019s Kristine Johnson reported, thousands of college dollars\"\"<\/a> are given away each year \u2013 even to toddlers \u2013 and the competition isn\u2019t as stiff as you might think.<\/p>\n

Avalon\"\"<\/a> Theisen has run an environmental group since she was 10 years old.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just love doing something good for our planet,\u201d Theisen said.<\/p>\n

And her passion has paid off big time. She already has won numerous college scholarships, and her mother is thrilled.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s expensive these days to go to school, and anything helps,\u201d said Deborah Theisen.<\/p>\n

According to one study, in 2030, the price\"\"<\/a> for a private university could be as high as $130,000 a year. Even in-state universities could cost $40,000.<\/p>\n

Few parents know it, but you can indeed cash in by having your child score a scholarship at an early age.<\/p>\n

\u201cSome of these scholarship programs aren\u2019t very competitive because parents aren\u2019t thinking about scholarships for their children who are under age 13,\u201d said scholarship expert Mark Kantrowitz.<\/p>\n

The awards run the gamut, from academic achievement to standouts for service. Jessica Johnston of the Scholarship Academy said parents need to do their homework.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo you want to start thinking about what your child is passionate about, and then research the scholarships in those specific categories,\u201d Johnston said.<\/p>\n

Whatever your child\u2019s interest, there could be a scholarship. Google has a drawing contest that offers $30,000 in college money. Olive Garden has a food themed essay contest with a $5,000 scholarship, and there are many others.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are some normal scholarships, and then some more unusual scholarships that involve quirky things like playing marbles,\u201d Kantrowitz said.<\/p>\n

Experts said parents should help build a child\u2019s scholarship brand early.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf they love nature, then make sure they\u2019re doing some recycling program. If they\u2019re great at public speaking, you want to start honing those skills,\u201d Johnston said.<\/p>\n

Avalon Theisen and her mother said they are thrilled both to save the world and save college costs.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not waiting \u2018til the last couple years of school, and then, \u2018I want to go to college,\u2019\u201d Deborah Theisen said. \u201cShe\u2019s doing it now.\u201d<\/p>\n
